Subject: From a recent letter to me
The following, from a recent letter to me, gives insights as to why there are so many problems among devotees: many "devotees" neither know what is in Srila Prabhupada's books, nor practice seriously. In other words, their Krsna consciousness is superficial or practically nil.
> I have noticed that many devotees do not read Srila Prabhupada's books regularly every day, or not at all. And majority of those are already 1st and second initiated, and some of them are preachers (that is their main service). I asked those devotees WHAT they preach if they do not read, or never read Srimad Bhagavatam, Caitanya Caritamrita, Bhagavad-gita, NOD, etc. I just wonder how somebody has an idea to surrender their whole life and soul to Krsna if they do not know the philosophy (anybody can cheat on them, or they will become sentimentalists).
> more than 90% of devotees have a TV at home. Some initiated deovtees eat karmi bread, karmi cakes, karmi snacks, because they say it is vegetarian. And just yesterday I saw an initiated mataji who bought chips and gave to her little son, without offering it first to Krsna. I told her that devotees do not eat such food. Only in an emergency, if nothing else is available, and they are in danger of dying, at that time you can take and that she should offer it first to Krsna. I told her that her duty as mother is not just to nourish stomach of the child, but his consciousness.
